IYPE activities in Hungary

Dr. László Szarka, Secretary of the Hungarian National Committee (NC) of the International Year of the Planet Earth submitted the following formulation as contribution to an IYPE publication.
"The NC was established under the auspices of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the UNESCO and IUGS National Committees. The programs − organized by various associations, universities, research institutes and private companies − are under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic of Hungary. The National Launch Event was held on April 17, followed with a four-days long "Earth Science Fair" at the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest. The IYPE was briefly reviewed in the Hungarian Parliament. The Hungarian Science Festival 2008, organized by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences has a special, IYPE-inspired slogan: "Science for the Habitable Earth". Between 3-7 November, 2008 tens of lectures are held at the Academy about the modern content of the Greek Classical Elements (Earth, Water, Air and Fire) and about the Humanity. IYPE NC for Hungary prepared a declaration (a Hungary-focussed “Paris Declaration”). In 2008 numerous publications (including the Hungarian version of the IYPE booklet series, under the title GEO-FIFIKA) are produced. Throughout the country symposia (among others a conference, pointing out the compatibility of Earth sciences and religion), contests, film shows (e.g., the movie “Another Planet”) and other performances are organized, with increasing media coverage."
