Fun Fact: Denmark's reserve goalkeeper Kim Christensen was subject to controversy in September 2009 when he was spotted by a camera kicking a goal post inwards to make the target smaller during IFK Gothenburg's league match with Orebro. The Swedish Football Federation (SVFF) decided against fining or banning the cheeky shot-stopper, despite Christensen revealing that it was something that he did regularly.
83,391 The number of people who attended the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg to see Germany beat Ghana last night.
51 The number of international goals to Jon Dahl Tomasson's name. One more will draw him level with Denmark's all-time record goalscorer, Poul Nielsen.
What We Saw Yesterday...
England 1-0 Slovenia (report)
After one disappointing and one totally abject performance, England finally illustrated some of the qualities that had them listed as one of the favourites for the tournament. Jermain Defoe's goal was enough to separate the sides in the end, but England were made to sweat for their result as stoic Slovenia refused to lie down. Fabio Capello's side now face Germany in the last sixteen on Sunday.
USA 1-0 Algeria (report)
If England thought they had a tough time progressing, then the USA had a veritable mountain to climb as they entered injury-time in their game with Algeria without any breakthrough. However, as is often the case with Bob Bradley's side, Landon Donovan came to the rescue to break Slovenian hearts with a late strike. The game provided terrific entertainment with both sides coming into it with the possibility of progression. England may have grabbed the headlines, but the USA claim top-spot and avoid Germany in the next round.
Australia 2-1 Serbia (report)
Once again, despite the tangible potential of their side, Serbia fall at the group stage of a major tournament. As was the case in Germany in 2006, they finish bottom of a group and fly home early.
They had the chances to win the match, but were punished by two quickfire goals in the second-half from Tim Cahill and Brett Holman. Marko Pantelic grabbed a goal back, but the Serbians were unable to find an equaliser that would have sent them through.
Ghana 0-1 Germany (report)
This was a terrific game that illustrated both the attacking bravery of the German side and the organisational qualities of the Ghanaians. Mesut Oezil eventually settled the game with a superb strike having been awarded too much space on the edge of the penalty area. That doesn't tell the whole story though, as Jogi Loew's juggled with fire for periods of the second-half as they went in search of the winning goal. Both sides will provide difficult challenges to their opponents from Group C in the next round.
