George Wallace reviews Urban Haiku and More in the Latest Big City Lit

A big shout out to George Wallace for his amazing review for my book, "Urban Haiku and More" in the latest issue of Big City Lit.

Here's an excerpt from the review:

In Urban Haiku and More, Patricia Carragon brings something else to the table. There's a kind of urbane wittiness to these works, by turns caustic, plaintive, engaging and abrupt — a kimono-clad harkening to Whitman's notion of the Barbaric Yawp.

This is poetry on the urban edge, haiku that attempts to straddle the wide gulf between New York City street smarts and the ineffable parlance of the zen moment. Often enough, it is compelling stuff.

Carragon is nothing if not in this world and of it, warts and all, delineating the painful truths as opposed to the transcendental. There are ample examples of her unflinching candor: Here's a couple "I douche my drain/With Drano/she/does hers/with Liquid-Plumr.' ' stained sheets/not from/your boyfriend's last visit.' Or this: 'love/decides to/take the subway//and gets screwed/in the/tunnel.'

Laos: New 100,000 Kip banknote

New Laos 100,000 Kip banknote

The Bank of the Lao PDR will issue a 100,000 Kip banknote early February in a bid to encourage more people to use the national currency. Speaking at a press conference in Vientiane yesterday, Currency Issuing Department Director General Mr Souphat Khotnhotha said the main purpose of putting the 100,000 kip note in circulation was to make it easier for people to make cash payments.

With the proliferation of trade, frequent cash transactions are becoming an increasing necessity. “With 100,000 kip banknotes, people won’t need to carry so many notes around with them to pay for goods and services,” he said, adding that many people prefer to use foreign currencies as they are easier to carry. At present, the highest value kip banknote is 50,000 kip (US$6) while the highest value Thai baht banknote is 1,000 baht (US$32).

Mr Souphat said the new 100,000 kip note is worth US$12, and this higher value will encourage more Lao people to use their national currency. Economists say the Bank of the Lao PDR will find it easier to manage money supply and keep foreign exchange rates stable if everyone uses the kip in cash transactions.

In response to public concerns that inflation would rise with such a large banknote in circulation, Mr Souphat said it would not result in an increase in money supply. “The supply of money will remain unchanged,” he said. He explained that the presence of the 100,000 kip note would not put any more money into people’s pockets so there was no need to worry about a rise in inflation. He also said the Bank of the Lao PDR would ensure that circulation of both small and large denomination banknotes was sufficient to enable people to pay for goods and services of varying prices. The new banknotes have been printed overseas, and contain a security feature that prevents them from being counterfeited.

Many people have complained about the short supply of small denomination banknotes in circulation, which they need to give as small change. They also said the shortage led to inflation because vendors set prices based on the availability of banknotes. Bank of the Lao PDR officials say that traditional merit-making ceremonies are partly to blame, because so many notes are damaged in the process and it is impossible for the bank to ensure a constant supply of small denomination notes. They said the cost of printing both small and large denomination banknotes was similar, and that constantly having to print more small notes was a costly undertaking.

Roanoke Times Leaps Ahead of Mayo Clinic’s Alzheimer Knowledge

-
Roanoke Times, 1-31-12, Pg E1: Almost full page exposé:
"Alzheimer’s – how to make sure you’re not next"
-
Apparently the Editorial Girls at the Roanoke Times and their associate at the Orlando Sentinel have MD credentials in addition to their journalism credentials that empower them to tell the public “how to make sure you’re not next”! How comforting is that! Are these charlatan’s subject to lawsuits if their readers follow their instructions and then get Alzheimer’s? Could their medical licenses then be in jeopardy?
-
Apparently they are in conflict with the published position that, according to the Mayo Clinic, one of the most knowledgeable institutions about health issues: “While the causes of Alzheimer's are not yet fully understood, its effect on the brain is clear.”
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/alzheimers-disease/DS00161/DSECTION=causes

Today’s WSJ Alzheimer article (Pg D1): A new target in fighting brain disease: Metals.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204740904577192901072611524.html
-
Of particular focus are the amounts of: iron, copper and zinc (all of which are included in the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) posted by the US Government). No reason for concern there!
-
The headline claim: “how to make sure you’re not next to get Alzheimer’s” represents a new personal best in the category of chutzpa and false advertising.
If a company ran an ad that made these claims the Editorial Girls would be at the front of the line demanding retractions and legal actions.

Florida Highway Patrol’s “Failure to Foresee” Results in 10 deaths

-
Roanoke Times, 1-31-12, Pg 4: Florida: Patrol defends reopening interstate ahead of wrecks that resulted in 10 people killed in fiery crash where visibility was reduced to zero by smoke from an ongoing fire.
-
This tragic situation will likely not result in any action taken against those who are responsible for “the public safety” and who made decisions that in retrospect should be subject to the “known or should have known” or “failure to foresee” rules that have become so rigorously applied to ordinary citizens in accident situations in recent years.
-
Prior blog item: Criminalizing Accidents
http://roanokeslant.blogspot.com/2012/01/criminalizing-accidents.html
Everyone is subject to involvement in an accident. The targeting of those involved by aggressive law enforcement personnel and the associated district attorneys can result in draconian outcomes considering the lack of Malice aforethought or depraved indifference involved. Apparently disregard for an actions possible bad outcomes or failure to foresee negative outcomes has become the standard for determining who goes to jail in many cases. That applies to driving on ice or snow if a DA decides to make the case that you should have foreseen bad things before starting your trip in bad weather!
-
Included in this big chasm, between those who are prosecuted as the results of accidents and those who are not, often include a hostile rush to judgment if a business is involved.
Of note would be the 29 miners killed in 2010 in the Massey Energy Mine in West VA.
The lynch-mob mentality demonstrated by the media, unions and government investigators clearly made a deliberate and professional investigation impossible.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/10/us/10westvirginia.html
-
Society needs to assess this crusade to criminalize those involved in accidents where there was no malice aforethought and there is reasonable doubt about the persons involved having acted in a “reasonable and prudent” manner. We also need to demand that whatever the rules are they be applied equally to all persons and situations.

Sharia Honor Killings And Western Culture And Laws

-
Roanoke Times, 1-3-12, Pg 5: Jury finds Afghan family guilty in 4 honor killings.
-
The actions of too many Radical Muslims stand in stark contrast to the assurances from our virtual-Muslim President that the Muslim religion and the Koran and Sharia Law and the Madrasas schools all represent a kind and gentle way of life and that the problem is that we “westerners” just don’t understand this culture.
Of particular interest is the number of liberal-progressive women who buy into the Obama view about this subject apparently oblivious to the reality of how women are treated under Sharia Law.
-
A current stark example is that a jury in Kingston Ontario found an Afghan family guilty of 'honor' killing three teenage sisters.
KINGSTON, Ontario – A jury on Sunday found an Afghan father, his wife and their son guilty of killing three teenage sisters and a co-wife in what the judge described as "cold-blooded, shameful murders" resulting from a "twisted concept of honor" in a case that shocked and riveted Canadians.
Prosecutors said the defendants allegedly killed the three teenage sisters because they dishonored the family by defying its disciplinarian rules on dress, dating, socializing and using the Internet.

WSJ, 1-27-2012: No Need to Panic About Global Warming
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204301404577171531838421366.html?mod=googlenews_wsj
“There’s no compelling scientific argument for drastic action to ‘decarbonize’ the world’s economy.”
-
In other words: The moderate Global Warming of one degree change in global temperature during the past 130 years (NASA data):
http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/graphs_v3/Fig.A2.gif
And no significant temperature change since 1998 (NASA data):
http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/graphs_v3/Fig.C.gif
Are not unusual temperatures in earths recent natural variations; and there are many benefits to the current level of temperatures compared to the cool period of 1940 to 1975; and the cold period of the little ice age that ended in 1750 (just in time for the American Revolution; albeit it was still very cold at Valley Forge).
-
The conclusions, that global warming is not a crisis, are underwritten by 16 distinguished scientists:
Claude Allegre, former director of the Institute for the Study of the Earth, University of Paris;
J. Scott Armstrong, cofounder of the Journal of Forecasting and the International Journal of Forecasting;
Jan Breslow, head of the Laboratory of Biochemical Genetics and Metabolism, Rockefeller University;
Roger Cohen, fellow, American Physical Society; Edward David, member, National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Sciences;
William Happer, professor of physics, Princeton;
Michael Kelly, professor of technology, University of Cambridge, U.K.;
William Kininmonth, former head of climate research at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology;
Richard Lindzen, professor of atmospheric sciences, MIT;
James McGrath, professor of chemistry, Virginia Technical University;
Rodney Nichols, former president and CEO of the New York Academy of Sciences;
Burt Rutan, aerospace engineer, designer of Voyager and SpaceShipOne;
Harrison H. Schmitt, Apollo 17 astronaut and former U.S. senator;
Nir Shaviv, professor of astrophysics, Hebrew University, Jerusalem;
Henk Tennekes, former director, Royal Dutch Meteorological Service;
Antonio Zichichi, president of the World Federation of Scientists, Geneva.
-
These are some of the many significant scientists that the Editorial Girls at the Roanoke Times label as “Deniers” (a not so subtle nasty connection to the Holocaust). If you’re intellectually challenged – do what you were taught in your journalism courses – label your adversaries as bad people as they do in their following editorial:
-
Roanoke Times, 1-28-2012, Pg 11: Editorial: Planting zones warm-up.
-
Warm-loving plants are migrating northward as fewer killing-frosts extend northward.
“Climate-change deniers will see a government conspiracy to persuade the masses that temperatures are growing warmer.”
-
The Global Warming 1984-DoubleSpeak of the liberal-progressive media that “Global Warming” means “temperature increases that are due primarily to man-made CO2 has now been rejected by most learned people of the world. We now have a world community that understands that earth’s natural variations in temperature have existed for millions of years without any contribution from man-kind and that CO2 in general and man-made CO2 specifically are not the primary green house gases; water vapor is!
Wake up Girls – and stop the name calling and fixation on Gore’s misguided crusade.

Zooey Deschanel Talks Hair and Beauty in February 'Allure'

Zooey Deschanel Talks Hair and Beauty in February 'Allure'

Zooey Deschanel, February Allure cover girl, professes in the upcoming issue she's all "bangs and eyes" and "an outsider on the inside." She also offers up her favorite hair and beauty products and reflects on some style missteps. We were already enamored with the New Girl star and her girly-girl vibe and now we're positively smitten.

First, let's talk about that hair. Zooey Deschanel maintains her fabulous mane of ultra-long locks with Oribe products. The luxury hair care line offers a range of cutting-edge formulations that the brand claims will deliver "the highest possible levels of performance and sophistication." Zooey's cut, featuring long layers and heavy lash-grazing bangs, has become her signature look. Even though she occasionally grows out the fringe, she always goes back to the eye-opening style.

To keep her complexion ultra-fresh and flawless, Zooey is committed to sunblock, specifically Josie Maran Argan Oil Daily Moisturizer with SPF 40+. She's a devotee of oils and also uses John Masters Organics pomegranate facial nourishing oil and Laventine Olive Forte Water-soluable Facial Cleansing Oil. The velvety texture and nutritive benefits of oils have long been acknowledged and work to balance almost every skin type.

When it comes to cosmetics, Zooey confessed she doesn't wear a lot of makeup. She also mentioned, "I have a Rimmel contract. They have really good liquid eyeliner." In keeping with her preference for lighter products, makeup artist Pati Dubroff, who created Zooey's look for the Allure cover, used a combination of luminescent peach and ivory shadows and a bit of black eye pencil along with a soft peachy-pink blush. However, she did incorporate a pop of vibrant red lipstick to complete the super-feminine look.

Justin Bieber Is Now a Brunette

Justin Bieber Is Now a Brunette

Recently, pictures of Justin Bieber surfaced that had us scratching our heads. His crowning glory, while still shaggy, was distinctly darker. The dark blonde locks we've come to know and love were no longer.

According the The Justin Bieber Shrine, fans are surmising that Justin's newly-dyed 'do "is for the filming of the new basketball drama movie with Mark Walhberg." Wahlberg revealed in a recent interview, "Yeah, Justin Bieber and I are going to do a movie together...They [Paramount] may announce it fairly soon." Wahlberg was purposefully vague about the plot, but mentioned it would be "kind of like a reluctant mentor in an inner-city environment."

Whatever the reason for Justin's tinted tresses, we're curious how his fans will react. When he cut off some serious length back in February 2011, he reportedly lost 80,000 Twitter followers. We're hoping the legions of Beliebers will give the new look a chance and ultimately embrace Justin's experimentation.

Kate Beckinsale Brings the Heat

Kate Beckinsale Brings the Heat
Kate Beckinsale kept it simple for her Underworld: Awakening photocall in Madrid—simply hot. She smoldered in this red Michael Kors number from his Spring 2012 line. No accessories to be seen, she let the dress (and that resiliently fabulous hair) do the talking. Perhaps she was channeling the mastery of her bombshell Donna Karan look from her appearance on Letterman. Kate Beckinsale At last week's LA premiere, she went all out in one of Jenny Packham's glitzy masterpieces. Typically a gown would easily trump a cocktail dress, but surprisingly I much prefer the sleekness of Kate's crimson MK style.

Film Review – Underworld: Awakening 3D

One cannot deny the appeal of a hero battling it out against the likes of vampires, werewolves or zombies in an escape from film-land’s more serious feature films. We’ve seen the likes of Wesley Snipes as vampire-battling Blade and Milla Jovovich‘s Alice tackling zombies in their own franchises and the return of another other-worldly defender see’s Kate Beckinsale back in the familiar leather attire of Selene for Underworld Awakening 3D. Unfortunately a welcome return it is not.

Once again we follow the path of vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale) who finds herself captured following ‘The Purge’, in which the humans attempt to eradicate all signs of vampire and Lycan (werewolves) life to restore peace and prosperity to everyday life. Frozen in a container and separated from her lover Michael, a half vampire, half Lycan hybrid, she escapes 12 years later and attempts to relocate her one true love.

On her journey she finds that the vampires have taken refuge underground as well as a new batch of Lycans, ready to once again overthrow the humans. As well as these revelations, Selene discovers she also has a daughter, a young girl named Eve (India Eisley) who is heavily sought after due to her unique DNA, a combination of hers and Michael’s. As the Lycans close in on Eve, Selene calls on the help of fellow vampire David (Theo James) and human Detective Sebastian (Michael Ealy) to ensure that no harm comes to her highly valuable child and the Lycans are once again thwarted in their plans to be the dominant race.

In this fourth instalment of the Underworld saga we find ourselves witness to an unnecessary and highly dissatisfying entry into the vampire sub-genre. Lacking any real structure, the film jumps from one action scene to the next hardly giving itself time to breathe and reveal the full extent of its actual plot. From the word go we are thrust into an ensemble of scenes where we witness Selene kicking backside with relative ease, backed by a seriously ear piercing soundtrack which makes for more uncomfortable viewing. Jumping from one to the next, each supposed adrenaline-fuelled sequence is split by a rather rushed and poorly put together exploration into the world we are immersed in.

Indeed the world is simplistic, it’s Humans vs Vampires vs Lycans, but it is almost brushed over in favour of providing more splashing blood and gunfights than you can throw your hat at. Mix this in with the 3D element and things take a turn even further south. With an insistence on providing some impressive 3D moments, directors Björn Stein and Måns Mårlind sadly enter the realm of repetitiveness and insist on featuring smashing glass flying out of the screen a little too often and offer few other instances of the extra dimension.

Shoulder Exposure

Shoulder Exposure

Fashion's sexy focal point is ceaselessly shifting. The moment it tires of one zone it moves onto a fresh new show of bare skin. The power of the deep-plunge continues to resonate into another season, extending the sternum's glory moment for a while longer. Spring 2012, however, brought two new hot spots to our attention: the upper abs and shoulders. Let's direct our attention towards the one we can all embrace.

This off-the-shoulder trend has an alluring carefree effect—a quiet, innocent, almost accidental come-hither charm. It's feminine with a naughty twist, a style even your boyfriend will love (but let's not pretend your fashion choices revolve around him). Sure, this sort of shoulder exposure is nothing new, but it has been perfected by today's top designers and red carpet savvy celebs. It's officially time to brush your shoulders off.

Mila Kunis heated things up at the Friends With Benefits premiere in this saucy Lanvin number. A simple little red dress was taken up a notch with these seductive shoulder-grazing straps. Her smoldering stare didn't hurt either.

Rodarte became a household name after their renowned costume designs for The Black Swan, but their talents don't stop with feathers and tutus. The Mulleavy sisters' Spring 2012 collection countered their darkly dramatic past with colorful airy pieces. They embarked on loads of shoulder-display, one of their most girlish designs already gracing the red carpet on young Elle Fanning.

Diane Kruger can wear anything and look positively divine—and she often puts this to the test (like recently with her not-so-graceful Chanel number). Forever one of of Karl's darlings, she pulled off this pale pink bow-adorned Couture design for an AIDS benefit in Paris, revealing that even her collar bones are fab.

It's only a matter of time: This Marchesa dress and Lea Michele have a date with destiny. The label is famous for their extravagant frivolities, but their soft elegance is what makes red carpet magic. Remeber Anne Hathaway's crimson mousseline masterpiece at the Oscars?

The brilliance of Minka Kelly's Vivienne Westwood dress is that it gives the illusion that the straps have merely slipped off her shoulders. Actually, that's the genius in all of Westwood's designs: the juxtaposition of haphazardly draped fabric on corseted bodices.

Zac Posen may be famous for his mermaid silhouettes, but for Spring the designer drew attention upward in a most romantic clavicle exposé. Old Hollywood met Pride and Prejudice for this ladylike soiree.

This trend isn't just for fanciful dressers. Case in point: Kate Bosworth (one of Hollywood's most modern sartorialists) in Calvin Klein (the reigning king of minimalism). Who would have imagined a nude sheath could be so darn provocative. Red lipstick does get some credit.

Luca Luca's Raul Melgoza conveyed the vigor of Bianca Jagger's '70s style in his latest runway show. His playfully pleated sapphire design was a favorite due to its bluntly horizontal neckline.

Katy Perry's gold lamè dress at the Grammy Nominations Concert was actually quite demure on the KP wacky scale. Once you get past the entrancing shine, the cut of the Georges Chakra piece is quite exquisite.

Oscar de la Renta covered all sorts of high-fashion ground at his Spring 2012 show. Need a gown for that lavish fairy tale ball you'll be attending? Or a Barbie-approved pencil skirt for work? Perhaps a gauzy wind-blown ensemble perfect for running through a meadow? Then Oscar is your man. He fills our fantasy closet with timeless looks that don't refrain from showing a little shoulder, err, skin.
