MILAGROS DE LA TORRE, MANUELA VIERA-GALLO, TERESA SERRANO, ARTEMIO, VARGAS SUAREZ UNIVERSAL: SOLO PROJECTS AT PINTA NEW YORK CURATED BY PLB

Milagros de la Torre, 'Imprint', at Toluca Editions www.tolucaeditions.com
A retrospective of work from 1990 to 2000, the photographs dealing with different kinds of impressions or marks on surfaces or the body, going from negatives of indigenous population in Cuzco tinted to make them look whiter, murder utensils from the prisons of Mexico, historical texts censored by the Spanish Inquisition, to bullet proof jackets, to imprints made by her teeth on her own body.

2300 still photographs with sound, Filmed in HD-24, 00:02:00
This video explores the transformation of cultural identity. Staged as a fashion photo set, the video consists of 2300 still photographs animated into 2 minutes of duration. The images document the dressing and undressing of a Japanese woman who adopts foreign styles. This adoption of foreignness does not aim at the reiteration of fashion statements but instead styles appear as transformative venues, deployed to interrogate the notion of subjectivity as a struggle against the constraining forms of tradition. In addition, the video fictionalizes an almost anthropological observation to open two parallel fields of inquiry: one that focuses on the legacies of feminism in the transformation of cultures and the other which conceives the construction of hybridity as cross-pollination. Thus addressing the impossible history of the contemporary social landscape by which the history of a hybrid is just a question mark on the border of two territories left behind. As the title implies the final question resides in the very nature of identity adoption, seen from the outside as a chameleon effect, internally a desperate strategy of survival through camouflage.
