SILKE OTTO-KNAPP, 'VOYAGE OUT' AT GREENGRASSI, LONDON
Silke Otto-Knapp
Voyage Out
10th of March – 30th of April 2011
Silke Otto-Knapp will present a group of new paintings for her third solo show at greengrassi. Voyage out takes its title from the eponymous first novel by Virginia Woolf, published in 1915, chronicling a young woman’s journey by sea.
For the show, Otto-Knapp explores the illumination of moonlight within spaces familiar in her work. Gardens, landscapes and stagesets are defined by diffuse light and soft shadow produced by the moon. Effected by a complex layering of reflective metallic and muted watercolours and gouache, Otto-Knapp’s canvases simultaneously obscure and reveal.
Silke Otto-Knapp was born in 1970 in Osnabrück, Germany. Otto-Knapp has exhibited extensively in the UK and abroad at venues including Kunstverein Munich, Munich (2010); Kunsthall Oslo, Oslo (2010); Migros Museum, Zürich (2010); and Modern Art Oxford, Oxford (2009). Her exhibition, Lilac Garden (Rehearsal), will be on view at Sadler's Wells Theatre, London until the 29th of April 2011. Otto-Knapp lives and works in London.
